Babel has also been acclaimed as "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry". Isaac Babel lived a short and tumultuous life, flooded with questions of his Russian-Jewish identity, numerous love affairs, and above all, the desire for expression. After leaving school Babel moved to Kiev. He began writing but had no success with his work until he met Maxim Gorky in 1916. Soon afterwards Gorky Isaac Babel met Antonina Pirzhkova in 1932.
